Curtain Measuring Guide

To ensure the best fit take time to measure your window carefully. A metal tape measure is best for accuracy. Firstly you will need to decide whether you want your curtains to hang from a track or pole. Both tracks and poles should be positioned 15cm (6 inches) above the window and extend 15-20cm (6-8 inches) either side.

Measuring Curtain Width and Length

Measure the total width of the track or pole (excluding the finials). Do not measure the window unless it is wall-to-wall.Always allow for overlap; this is an additional measurement normally 2.5cm (1 inch) that allows the curtains to overlap in the middle when they are closed.

Measuring length: Before measuring the length you will need to decide whether you want your curtains to fall to the floor, below the sill or to the sill. Ideally:

  • Floor length should curtains finish 1.5cm (1/2 inch) from the floor.
  • Curtains that fall below the sill should finish 15cm (6 inches) below.
  • Sill length curtains should finish 1.25cm (1/2 inch) above the sill.

Measuring Curtains for Poles

Pencil pleat curtains:
Measure from the eye. This is the small metal ring at the bottom of each curtain ring. This prevents the pole or rings from being obscured by the curtain.

Tab top and eyelet curtains:
Measure from the very top of the pole.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds may be fitted either inside the window recess or outside the window.

When deciding whether to fit the Roman blind inside the recess the following points need to be true.

  • The recess need to be at least 7.5cm (3”) deep.
  • The window does not open inwards
  • The window is straight (ie the height and width varies by less than 2cm(3/4”))

To measure a Roman blind to fit inside the recess.

  • Measure the width in 3 positions (top, middle and bottom)
  • Make a note of the smallest measurement in centimetres.
  • Measure the height in 3 positions (both sides and middle)
  • Make a note of the smallest measurement in centimetres.

To measure a Roman blind to fit outside the recess.

  • We recommend the Roman blind to extend a minimum of 5cm(2”) either side of the window
  • We recommend the Roman blind to extend a minimum of 5cm(2”) above and below the window
  • Measure the width of the window and add 10cm(4”)
  • Measure the height of the widow and add 10cm(4”)
  • You may add more than the 10cm if you wish the Roman blind to extend further from the window edges.

When measuring for Roman blinds you should always use a metal tape measure as a plastic clothe tape measure may stretch giving a false reading.
